Now You Can Take Control of Your Mental Health

This is serious. Like really serious.

But that doesn’t mean that this article is going to get all technical and boring. No.

So, what’s mental health?

To quote the World Health Organization (WHO), “Mental health is a state of well-being in which an individual realizes his or her own abilities, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and is able to make a contribution to his or her community.”

Have you noticed how normal stresses of life are steadily becoming not so normal? The more reason why you should take care of yourself mentally!

But what can you do? Are you even in control of anything when it comes to your mental health? Yes, you are. And there are steps you can personally take to improve your mental health.

Take a look at these simple steps you can take to ensure you are healthy.

Express Your Feelings

Is it an easy thing for you to put your feelings into words? For some people it’s just a matter of having someone to talk to and their feelings will flow. If that’s not you, you may need to work a little harder at talking about your feelings. But the effort is totally worth it.

You can’t compare a stable mind to the little effort you put in making one friend.

It’s good to know that you don’t have to be popular or to open up to everyone. You only need to find one person who really cares. It is actually surprising how easy it can be to find someone who really cares.

Find and Do What You are Good At

Can you think of something you enjoy doing? Anything at all. Of course, it has to be something that adds value to your life. If you want to improve your mental health, it would be a bad idea to engage in any activity that leaves you feeling down. Anything that leaves you in low spirits, or with feelings of guilt.

So, find something you are good at. Make it a habit to do it regularly. It could be painting, listening to other people, hand crafting items, singing and so on.

Spending time doing what you love and that you are good at is therapeutic. It leaves you with a feeling of achievement which is fundamental for your emotional and mental well-being.

Keep Healthy Relationships

It’s a good feeling to have people in your life who you connect with. It may take some work to build such relationships. But this too, is worth your time. Having this circle of people not only stabilizes you emotionally, but it also gives you people you can talk to as was mentioned in the first step.

It’s also important to know that not all relationships are up-building and should be kept. If you feel that a relationship is not helping you to stay mentally healthy, it is okay to break it off. The best way to do so is not to get into a fight or to completely ruin the relationship. It’s best to end on a note where you can still have a peaceful relationship. And that is possible to do.

Be a Giver

Interestingly, humans are made in such a way that they are happy doing good things to other people.

No matter how much people have changed and many seem not to care about others, do not underestimate the power of giving. Be it your time, your energy or your resources, giving to other people gives you a sense of satisfaction that you can’t find anywhere else.

When you give or share, you not only make the receiver happy, but you feel happy too. This is especially so if you give for the right reasons. The best reason to give is  help someone and not to show off.

It is a good thing for your health when you make other people happy.

Seek Help

What if you feel overwhelmed by your life and you feel you need more help? Do not hesitate to ask.

It may be that no matter how hard you have tried to follow the above steps you still feel strained. Please ask for help from someone. You can confide in a family member or a trusted friend to help you find the necessary help.

It’s also a good thing that in this age of technology and internet, there are sites dedicated to providing help with toll-free lines you can call in case you need someone to talk to.

If you feel you need to see a doctor, do not waste any time. Do so as soon as you can. And there is no shame in seeking help.

You have the Power

Remember the points we have discussed in this article. All of them are within your power. The require a little action on your part. But that’s a challenge you are up to.

So, talk about your feelings, do what you are good at, work at building healthy relationships, make it a habit to give to others and seek help when you need it. The power is in your hands. And the world needs you healthy so you can help someone else who is in need.

Wishing you good health😊
