Life expectancy is lower than desired in most countries.
In the United States, for example, it’s at just 78. That’s not the lowest in the world, but it’s lower than places like Canada where it’s at over 82.
Still, there are places in the world where people live longer than 100 years. How do they do it? Do you want to live for 100 years and still be active?
Even if you don’t get to 100, you can definitely add more years to your life. Did you know you have a high chance of getting to 90? You do.
So, how can you get these additional years?
This is the type of inner happiness that stays with you even when some things in your life aren’t going the way you want them to. You can call it contentment.
So, how do you achieve this type of happiness?
Take care of your basic needs. A simple truth that most people don’t know is that having an abundance after you meet your basic needs doesn’t add much to your happiness. Actually, downshifting has been found to not only increase happiness but to do so in a way that prolongs your life.
Meaningful relationships contribute to a long life. Can you connect with people who genuinely care about your well being? These could be family or people you’ve come to trust and who you can depend on in every situation.
But to be even happier, do good things for other people.
You probably know that diet will improve your health and by extension increase your life span. What you eat directly affects how long you live. But what exactly does it mean to have a good diet?
First of all, do not overeat. Complications linked to overeating, such as obesity and diabetes will only kill you faster.
Focus on a plant-based diet. Plants are a healthier source of nutrients. You are going to live longer if you make it your goal to fill your plate with more vegetables and fruits than with meats.
Also, try to replace the meats on your plate with fish. Oily fish is best, but all types of fish are a good source of lean protein which is good for your body.
One place in the world with most centenarians, is Sardinia, in Italy. Their diet, which is mostly plant-based plays a major role in their long lives.
It’s no secret that exercise is good for your health and will help you to live longer than the average person. In fact, if there was a pill called exercise, the inventor would be the richest person.
So, do you need a gym membership? Not necessarily. All you need to do is to use your feet. Can you walk instead of driving? Can you take the stairs instead of the elevator?
Most of the people who have lived the longest are people who have never seen the inside of a gym. But they walk every day and their daily routine forces them to perform physical activities. Can you do that? You won’t regret the outcome.
The truth is, you can live a longer, healthier life. Get these extra years by watching your diet, being happy and exercising naturally.
